Thread: Trying to migrate from Windows XP, but just can't!

each time have less reasons stick windows xp on pentium iv desktop, old, gets slow in 3 weeks of usage, running several cleaning , defrag applications , given limitations of machine, software not of problem, apart msoffice, use everyday stuff, browse web, edit documents, edit images. microsoft doesn't want use anymore, demonstrated skydrive desktop. there aren't reasons stick when there lightweight distribuitions can give machine new life.

in theory, @ least. because in pratice, can't find right distro/desktop environment computer. i've tried many, , far ones have tolerable performance lubuntu , linux mint mate 32-bit. xfce didn't perform well.

thing both lubuntu 12.04 , linux mint mate operative system, much, superior windows xp, boot fast, load programs fast, navigating , opening files , folders fast , responsive, less cpu , memory usage, when comes videos , web browsing, real pain.

start, firefox crashing, more on windows, no addons. chromium crashes lot , displays "aw snap" sign. then, can have limited amount of tabs opened, 5, cpu-saving addons enabled - adblock plus, flashblock, noscript, ghostery. major drawback, because can still browse lot of tabs opened on windows xp firefox, several panorama groups, crashes when number of tabs on 30 or 40.

also, video-related poor on both distribuitions, limited on gpu resources streaming video on player such smplayer or vlc allows me watch videos without lag on windows xp, while on referred distros, there lag, no matter quality video displayed (i don't try flash anymore, play on vlc or smplayer).

libreoffice slower msoffice when opening , saving files , takes cpu when information included on files increase. apart of waiting periods , rare crashes, manage live that.

these problems preventing me having complete daily experience , forcing me split work between windows , linux constantly, because nautilus file manager productive , fast windows xp explorer , system faster, responsive , resource-saver, if want browse internet comfortably, edit documents without waiting long saving or opening them, need make use of xp , faulty, counter-productive , crashy explorer... , consequently, need clean , defrag it, update individually each application when new updates available, of annoying reasons why want abandon windows xp completely.

have tips me improve performance of web browsing , multimedia playing on lubuntu or mint?

lubuntu not use ff default because needs cpu/ram. said dont try use apps needing huge resources, except if video card has lot of ram; or install ssd (there ssd's pcie card)
