Thread: Grub doesn"t recognize my win 7 device (SSD)

hello linux-experts,

have problem grub, bootmanager. @ first installed windows 7 on 400 gb hdd without problems. after installed on 120gb ssd ubuntu linux 12.04 cd.

partitions that:
/dev/sbd1 = ntfs = 119.24 gb (used 28.26)
/dev/sda1 = ext4 = 368.63 gb (used 9.96gb)
/dev/sda2 = extended = 3.98 gb (used -)
/dev/sda5 = linux-swap = 3.98 gb (used -)

(see: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/1157608/ )

unfortunately can boot ubuntu now. grub doesn't show me possibilty choose between ubuntu , win 7.

logged in bios-menue boot ssd manually.
-> says "error unknown filesystem grub rescue".

irc chat ubuntu told me, according result.txt posted @ http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/1157608/, grub bootmanager doesn't recognize ssd. should install bootmanager called "refind boot manager" (http://rodsbooks.com/refind/getting.html).

question: necessary ? can't repair grub manager somehow, since 1 has problem??

thank you. help!

did sda or drive in sda exist when installed windows sdb , sda boot drive in bios?

windows installs in 2 partitions, small 100mb boot/repair partition , main install. main install in sdb1 missing 2 boot files in 100mb boot partition. have seen when installing windows 7 sdb, puts boot partition on sda.

can repair windows install in sdb1, if have windows repaircd/usb or full install dvd run windows repairs. need boot flag on sdb1 , should set bios boot sdb first windows boot loader in mbr of sdb.

boot files missing 2 in red:
winxp
/boot.ini /ntldr /ntdetect.com
vista/7 (with 7 first 2 files in separate 100mb boot partition)
/bootmgr /boot/bcd /windows/system32/winload.exe

can windows add boot flag set active on. or use gparted or disk utility ubuntu add boot flag sdb.

above links summarized, see links if more detail desired
need boot vista/windows 7 installation disk or repair disk. hit enter @ language selection prompt hit "r" repair section. can select automatic boot repair tool, not good. select command prompt (console) , type in following commands:
# comment not copy or type comments
bootrec.exe /fixmbr #updates mbr master boot record not run if still want grub
chkdsk c: /r #(have run /r or /f separate entries) rerun until no errors
bootrec.exe /fixboot #updates pbr partition boot sector or see bootsect.exe commands
chkdsk c: /r
bootrec.exe /scanos
bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

still have wubi installed in windows ntfs partion. when use windows rebuild bcd not add wubi boot. if want still boot wubi have manually add bcd or can uninstall wubi if using full install.
