Thread: Installing Ubuntu using CD or Windows Installer

hi members,

joined today , making move linux. i'm installing ubuntu on windows 2000 computer built in 2001. computer has server motherboard , stable , workhorse. has never let me down. windows announced no longer supporting ie6 via automatic updates.

computer runs ie6 last browser update win2k. system has been placed on life support because of increased hardship of having loacte win2k system files without updates.

there nothing wrong system every , then, drive crashes , have re-install windows 2000. cannot automatic updates, becomes way more difficult reinstall critical files. yes can manually searching files on net i'm tired of having "forced" dig drivers, system files , programs used available me @ click of button.

use firefox else. use ie6 automatic updates via microsoft's update page (that can accessed via internet explorer 6 (ie6).

computer has "dual" pentium iii "copper mine" cpu's, have 1 gig of ddr memory (4 gig max on motherboard). via apollo pro chipset , 40 gig drive partitioned in following order:

c drive: 15 gigs (contains windows 2000 os)

d drive: 15 gigs (for installing programs)

e drive: 8 gigs (used storing data, documents etc.)

f drive: 1 gig (initially set location temp files never used)

i'd install ubuntu not sure if want install via cd image (which creates partition) or virtual drive (using alongside windows). have searched net , read lot of interesting articles still not sure path choose.

use system composing music on digital audio workstation using sonar , m-audio delta 98 sound card. video editing (using program). use adobe photoshop, study programming using microsoft visual basic 2005, , follow currency markets , stock markets using ninjatrader 6.5 host of other interests. can see system used many areas , function well. i’d keep way after installing ubuntu (if possible).

please answer following 3 questions. thank much.

1st question please:

1) virtual drive or virtual machine? read terms like

virtual box
disk image
virtual machine
physical host
host computer’s file system

understand “virtual box” software installed on windows computer , allows user install ubuntu software run alongside windows?

can’t seem understand concept of “virtual”. have “virtual clonedrive installed on system used read , install programs downloaded in iso image format.

virtual still confuses me. me…storage storage, no matter if physical storage or virtual storage. computer still needs make “room” store either or both of these formats. correct?

2nd question please

2) best way install ubuntu? virtual drive or via installation cd? utilize full desktop digital audio workstation (daw) inside ubuntu using either ubuntu studio, muse, rosegarden, qtractor or ardour. if ubuntu installed on virtual drive, performance issues might run verses installing daw ubuntu installed on actual partitioned area on hard drive?

3rd question please:

3) talking dual boot when running both windows 2000 , ubuntu on partitioned area or virtual drive? or ubuntu installation cd take care of configuration when boot system ask me if want run win2k or ubuntu?

thank kindly help.

for system specs, i'd recommend lightweight ubuntu derivative such xubuntu, lubuntu, or bodhi linux (my personal preference bodhi). don't bother virtualization if don't want keep windows. boot cd , installer step through. make sure select right hdd installation.
, first , foremost, before kind of installation data. can't stress enough.
