intro

common see newbies asking in microcontroller forums if can run linux on puny little 8-bit micro. results laughter. common see, in linux forums, asked minimum specs linux are. common answer requires 32-bit architecture , mmu , @ least megabyte of ram fit kernel. project aims (and succeeds in) shatter(ing) these notions.

<snip>

how fast it?

uarm no speed demon. takes 2 hours boot bash prompt ("init=/bin/bash" kernel command line). 4 more hours boot entire ubuntu ("exec init" , login). starting x takes lot longer. effective emulated cpu speed 6.5khz, on par you'd expect emulating 32-bit cpu & mmu on measly 8-bit micro. curiously enough, once booted, system usable. can type command , reply within minute. can, in fact, use it. used day format sd card, example. not fastest, think may cheapest, slowest, simplest hand assemble, lowest part count, , lowest-end linux pc. board hand-soldered using wires, there not requirement printed circuit board.
there's video on page.

awesome! sake of awesome.
