when you reduce opacity of a top layer how do you keep a bottom layer from shining through?

i have 2 objects intersecting each other on different layers. object on top layer reduced opacity , bottom layer hidden shining through. not want happen. want bottom layer remain hidden beneath top layer despite lowered opacity. how accompish simply? have cs2.

thanks this...

hello jack.

the way copy 'image' on separate layer, select, make solid white, stop bottom layer shining through.

then put original image on separate layer opacity, move above solid white image layer.

hope makes sense.
