Thread: Samba in 12.04 is a mess

i have spent last 3 days trying figure out wrong samba in precise.

how process should work:

1. try share folder in nautilus.
2. nautilus ask permission install samba , usershare dependencies.
3. approve , install software
4. folder shared , available in samba network.

happening.

3. approve , install software (occasionally step fails due unrelated bug in apt, wherein all packages suddenly become "unsigned"; step may fail due broken packages try overwrite each other or have broken install scripts)
4. falls apart. sometimes usershare makes error changing username i never asked supply kind of code, seems have been bug fixed ages ago (or maybe not). looks fine, folder isn't shared or available on samba network; in fact of time computer doesn't appear in network @ all, let alone shares.

naturally, assumed there'd hacky workaround there problem in linux , behold, there hundreds of hacky workarounds samba working in ubuntu.

none of them work. @ least none of dozen or i've tried far have worked, i've limited myself ones plausible , make sense while avoiding outlandish , overkill guides no explanations.

i've pretty given on usershare. doesn't there's hope of getting samba work way anymore, system configuration of samba fails every time.

best i've gotten far, after each attempt hack samba functioning, therefore several different configurations, same result:

1. windows computer on network can see ubuntu computerin network, , list available printers , shares.
2. try access share, ubuntu computer , permanently disconnects samba network.
3. windows gives two errors in one dialog--that may not have permission access share and network name ubuntu computer no longer available.

there time when samba "just worked" in ubuntu.


forgot, apport detected kind of bug in samba, failed file bug report because in 12.04 apport silently fails file bug reports.

well, 205th time's charm suppose.

trying method again, 1 step before getting started:

purged samba related packages except libsmbclient, libwbclient0, , python-smbc, again.

kept 3 because take out important, dependent packages if removed.

proceeded recommended in thread, again.

time worked.

still far user-friendly , not @ how things supposed done in ubuntu.

nautilus-share samba method needs work.
has work in lts release @ least.
