Upgrading from LR3 -> LR5, very slow performace

okay, took plunge.  bought new 'photographers cc' 9.99 per month.  after all, i'm on lr 3.6 , want of new fancy features of lr5.2.

copied catalog new directory.

imported lr5.

after catalog has been imported, ran optimize catalog make sure it's in sync lr5 wanted.

i'm running on imac, 2.7 ghz intel core i5 12 gb memory.  os x 10.9.

photos, catalog, , previews stored on external firewire 7.2k harddrive 1.8 tb free space.

i have 3 catalogs use on regular basis.

my main catalog has 62k photos in catalog , 20 gb cache.  other 2 each have less 10k photos.

in lr3 things move along no problems.  delays minimal, able switch between library , develop modules, make edits , move through photos.

in lr5 converted main catalog, or freshly created catalog 20 photos, lr5 doggy.

using latest 2012 camera calibration process hurts.

     healing brush jerky.

if zoom 8 1 , drag around screen there long delay, yes go down 8 1.  zoom in , out has noticeable delays.

have attempted both 'enable profile correction' turned on , off (an old hint remember seeing lr3 somewhat).

switching 2010 process things improve quite bit, still slower lr3.

i have both installed on system.  both own catalogs , have run side side , individually.  have taken same photo , processed in each program in normal process (in lr5 both 2012 , 2010 process) , baffled lack of performance seen in lr5.

is normal expectation lr5?  i've been using 6 hours now, can see dramatically increasing time process aggravation level new features...

i've been using lr3 since released, 99.9% of edits in lr , use healing brush extensively.  i've got several photos hundreds of healing fixes (lots of zits on teenagers) , have had no issues whatsover speed.  odd healing brush blocking issue when moving fix other works great.  edits profile correction turned on, use adjustment brush extensively , otherwise abuse program.  lr3 rock solid , @ 60k photos in main catalog, i've had no issues @ performance.

thanks,

ken, catalogue size (number of pictures) should not issue re. performance. i'm running lr5 on imac similar yours, 8 gig ram, , runs well. catalogue has on 18k pictures. perhaps problem related extensive use of healing brush? here excerpt adobe performance hints document:

spot removal tool, local corrections, , history panel

the spot removal tool , local corrections brush not designed hundreds thousands of corrections. if image contains many (hundreds) of localized adjustments, consider using pixel-based editing application such photoshop level of correction.

if have many corrections, check history panel. history panel has no limits, , isn't deleted unless specified. if you've been creating many local or spot corrections, history long, can slow lightroom's performance whole.

clear history panel clicking x on right of history panel header.
