Thread: live CD/USB not working in UEFI system

dear all,
bought new desktop pc following specs:
video card: pci express gt440 1gb ddr3 evga
cpu i5 3450
mainboard intel dz77sl-50k oem hdmi sin vga
1tb sata drive unpartitioned, think, got out of box.

have 12.04.1 amd64 iso image burnt cd , created live usb stick.
i've tried enabling , disabling uefi in bios menu, , tried booting both live cds , live usb , without uefi (because boot menu allows me choose).
in bios uefi enabled+uefi boot option, grub menu offering:
"try ubuntu without installing"
"install ubuntu"
"check disc defects"

none of these options works, pick 1 option, system crashes , reboots.

sake of testing, tried install windows 7 32 bits, , boot process advanced point crashed.

i've been reading lot, , many people says need esp before installing, created live usb. problem hdd empty , live usb won't boot, i'm kinda stuck.

information got out there overly complicated , confusing. there simple safe procedure install? should download different iso version?

in advance.
best,
juan

i afraid uefi has complicated things.

did download 64 bit version? 32bit version not have efi boot.

if going dual boot need plan partitions in advance. first partition must efi partition, windows wants several , best install ubuntu several partitions. uefi use gpt partitioning not mbr(msdos). gpt partitioning windows boot in uefi mode. ubuntu can boot mbr or gpt either bios or uefi.

have bios use gpt. have created gpt partitions gparted. under device, create partition table, advanced, choose gpt not default msdos (mbr) partitioning.

older windows info on gpt - 2008 updated 2011
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/wind.../gg463525.aspx
microsoft suggested partitions including reserved partition gpt & uefi:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...8ws.10%29.aspx
order on drive important:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/microso...rved_partition

if you're using uefi mode boot, don't need bios boot partition gpt partitions (only bios), need efi system partition (esp). entirely different; should 200-300 mib fat32 partition that's flagged esp , must first partition. in libparted-based tools, you'd give "boot" flag (which entirely unrelated mbr boot/active flag, although libparted makes them same). in gdisk, you'd give type code of ef00.
efi system partition ef00 (~100 -256mib, fat32) uefi, bios boot partition ef02 (~1mib, no filesystem) bios, , whatever partitions want linux.

pc's boot menu, dvd drive showed twice: once prefixed uefi, once bios.
grub efi -skodabenz
1. of modern uefi systems come gpt instead of mbr.
2. grub needs installed esp (efi system partition). esp has first partition in drive, file system of fat variant, , has larger 100 mib (200mib or more recommended). ubuntu mounts esp default in /boot/efi .
3. after install grub in esp, need make boot entry using efibootmgr, or launch uefi shell

total space want ubuntu:
ubuntu's standard install / (root) & swap, better add partition /home if allocating on 30gb.:
if gpt(not mbr) partitioning include these 2 first - partitions gpt primary
250 mb efi fat32
1 mb bios_grub no format
windows partitions, not know details.
ubuntu partitions - smaller root hard drive space limited , if total less 30gb use / not separate /home.
1. 10-25 gb mountpoint / primary or logical beginning ext4(or ext3)
2. 2 gb mountpoint /home logical beginning ext4(or ext3)
3. 2 gb mountpoint swap logical

depending on how memory have may not absolutely need swap having still recommended. not hibernate (boots fast enough me) if hibernating need swap equal ram in gib not gb. , if dual booting windows shared ntfs partition recommended. cannot create part of install, leave space. or partition in advance (recommended).
1 advantage of partitioning in advance installer use swap space speed install. herman tip.
