Thread: Backing up data

i posted previous question did not satisfactory answers, i'll generalize question. @ point i'm willing take reasonable solution.

need: have remote server. it's not mission critical -- if hard drive fails, can accept day or 2 of downtime. however, want ensure minimal data loss, preferably no data loss, in event of hard drive failure.

have: efi motherboard doesn't appear able disable efi mode. can access sata through ide, legacy ide, achi, , raid (emulated), along 2 identical 1.5tb hard drives, 1 of has working ubuntu installation.

spent lot of time trying proper raid1 set up, before coming realization @ moment, efi cannot used raid1. @ 1 point managed / mount on raid1, , although couldn't boot second drive, did data. don't know how achieved it, , haven't been able re-create condition since.

i'm open , suggestions. there way take existing / partition , convert raid1 using drive? if so, there way convert drive degraded raid / partition working bootable drive after failure of primary drive? barring that, there way backup working system onto separate hard drive little or no downtime system backups?

how using usb device raid1 this one? office server similar device maxtor using rsync.
