can alter sources.list reflect ubuntu , dist-upgrade?

after reading, found many sites answering question "no" , suggesting hard disk install. read on , decided way go. official ubuntu installation documentation had me put files on hfs+ partition , install through openfirmware. did that, rebooted of, , ran associated commands; received dreaded "can't read elf e_ident/e_type/e_machine info" error, supposedly solved after hoary. no sweat, thought, i'll reboot debian install , set things straight. funny thing, computer boots directly installation bootable drive , won't let me boot install. halp?
