i concerned 2 of posts have been removed thread entitled "the easy way securely erase data on old hard disc". these 2 posts have been moved "the jail" and, rudely imo, first post has been renamed moderator "nonsense"!

op requesting "easy way securely erase data" on "40g hard drives i'm prepared dump". although s(he) implied drives may given friends, doubt if used 40g drive wanted. increasing threat of identity , data theft, permanent removal of access data on disks is, in view, more important nominal financial value of small (working) drive. on basis, destruction of drive is, imo, valid way of ensuring remaining data can no longer accessed.

have researched problem in past own purposes and, having tried various methods, have come conclusion fastest, cost-effective , reliable method of data destruction applying hammer several times disk, mechanism , associated pcb.

while may true some magnetic data remain on disk, suggest beyond scope of few very specialised governmental organisations , all criminals, restore useful data disk.

on basis, first post suggestion valid , should not have been removed.

second post regarding thermite more "tongue-in-cheek" pointer methods of data destruction tried others. although have not used method, did appear give total data destruction , can therefore appear in thread imho. aside, if give users chuckle, did me, don't believe wrong include it! or ubuntu forum rules prohibit humour?

while other posts in thread did give worthy (but rather "geeky") suggestions did carry risk inexperienced users. easy, of tools used, mistype command , end wiping entire working os. in addition, these methods required working hdd , slow run.

otoh, suggestion fast , foolproof in hdd has first disconnected , removed pc. 1 advantage of is, of course, works equally both working , failed drives! tools method requires available in every household. eg. screwdriver, lump hammer , pair of safety goggles.
