Thread: Precise Automatic Update -authentication not prompted?

what have missed?
precise, 2d unity, auto-login single admin account.
update manager set present updates daily.
synaptic used individual package management otherwise.
password prompted application @ operations.

@ last couple of update presentations, update manager didn't prompt admin password when okayed install updates.
memory (i don't manually invoke update manager) update manager *did* prompt password when last used update packages manually.

machine running lucid prompts auto update installs.
can't understand how precise behaviour design.
begin troubleshooting?

a launchpad question answered now:

since 12.04, update manager privileged via policy kit update installed software without authentication.

new installs, including kernels, still need authentication.
