Thread: partition has no UUID
i can't linux partition show uuid; doesn't seem have one.
blkid shows uuid of ntfs windows xp partition , linux swap partition (/dev/sda6), nothing linux partition (/dev/sda5).
doesn't show in /dev/disks/by-uuid either.
tried fix running gparted, does list uuid, same uuid tht used have before screwed (ran windows fixmbr trying boot windows, didn't work either), , added uuid symlink in /dev/disks/by-uuid*
ran update-grub2 , worked!!! grub.conf found , used uuid of partition... until rebooted.
it's missing again /dev/disks/by-uuid , doesn't output blkid either.
way can boot machine editing grub2 boot menu , replacing uuid entry /dev/sdx5, x depending on drives have plugged in @ moment.
know why isn't showing up, , how fix it? need written mbr or something?
have working machine, it's annoyance, i'd better understand how works.
bunch,

ReplyDeleteFyi for anyone working on this no uuid issue. I ran the XP recovery console commands, bootcfg /rebuild, fixboot and fixmbr while logged into the XP install and the commands executed on a different hard disk which had Linux installed. I booted the Linux install and got an error that ntldr or whatever was missing. I did a chroot grub re-install and found I was missing the UUID, so I’m guess the partition table was messed up. What I did to resolve this was I backed up the Linux partition using fsarchiver, formatted the disk, restored the partition, used tune2fs to restore the old UUID -which may not be necessary- and did the chroot grub install and update again.
