Comparing documents and false positives
hello,
i have send proof of book printer. proof pdf. when return soft proof--another pdf use print--i need compare 2 make sure there have been no changes in text.
the compare documents feature beats side-by-side eyeball scan. lot of false positives, words flagged have not changed.
it appears pdf, exported indesign has hidden discretionary hyphens. in id these used make sure word breaks @ end of line @ correct syllable. invisible when printed. in pdf these not necessary because text ain't gonna reflow, right?
but when compare soft proof original pdf, words discretionary hyphens flagged. somehow printer has stripped discretionary hyphens. that's fine must rid of them in pdf?
below example. pdf shown 1 printer. comment box shows difference original pdf, though there in fact no difference on page.
any advice appreciated.
tom
i acrobat's text comparisons, have saved me bad goofs several times -- stray key-strokes, once caught indesign footnote numbering snafu. however, false positives have been annoying without flagging every single discretionary hyphen.
i imagine have tried image method comparisons, modern version of old trick of putting printouts of old , new versions of page on light table find differences.
i don't recall seeing comments of type "undefined", re-sorting comments type @ least isolate these can step through rest? i'm no scripter, can javascript mark or eliminate comments containing hyphens?
more drastic, worth trying eliminate discretionary hyphens? instance, apply harb's "freeze composition" in indesign, , search-and-replace discretionary hyphens. (read comments on in-tools site, in indesignsecrets blog links because might want modify way handles hyphens.)
good luck!
david
