Thread: network UNCLAIMED

hi! new ubuntu , have problem broadcom 4318 card. have been reading literally hundreds of posts regarding broadcom 43xx card (since many people seem have problems cards), tried quite few things, still unable make wireless work.

able gather, think might have "network: unclaimed" message whenever run 'lshw -c network' command on terminal.

whole string is:
code:
warning: should run program super-user. *-network:0 description: ethernet interface product: rtl-8139/8139c/8139c+ vendor: realtek semiconductor co., ltd. physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:05:00.0 logical name: eth0 version: 10 serial: 00:16:36:0b:d2:3c size: 100mbit/s capacity: 100mbit/s width: 32 bits clock: 33mhz capabilities: bus_master cap_list ethernet physical tp mii 10bt 10bt-fd 100bt 100bt-fd autonegotiation configuration: autonegotiation=on broadcast=yes driver=8139too driverversion=0.9.28 duplex=full ip=192.168.1.110 latency=64 maxlatency=64 mingnt=32 multicast=yes port=mii speed=100mbit/s resources: irq:18 ioport:a000(size=256) memory:c0208000-c02080ff *-network:1 unclaimed description: network controller product: bcm4318 [airforce 1 54g] 802.11g wireless lan controller vendor: broadcom corporation physical id: 2 bus info: pci@0000:05:02.0 version: 02 width: 32 bits clock: 33mhz capabilities: bus_master configuration: latency=64 resources: memory:c0204000-c0205fff warning: output may incomplete or inaccurate, should run program super-user.

doing wrong? know how "claim" it? said, read few posts on issue none of them seemed address mine fully. also, have read there way of doing ndiswrapper, since said should used last resort, have refrained using far.

fondly appreciated!!

it helpful view wireless system log generated during attempt connect.
here it:
1. leave laptop idle few of minutes (wireless off, connection attempt of time stamp in log clear) , try connect wireless router.

2. right after unsuccessful attempt connect wireless router, type in terminal:

code:
  cat /var/log/syslog | grep networkmanager > wirelesslog.txt
then:

code:
    gedit wirelesslog.txt
we start looking @ events time stamp of moment tried connect wireless connection. events interested in start @ last time-stamp jump , have "networkmanager" @ beginning of line.

see reports on network ssid connecting to, 2 dns servers being assigned, ip address being assigned dhcp etc.
in case of not happening , may able see trying , cannot, resulting in no-wireless connection.

may give hints not happening should, , why.
if post wirelesslog.txt file here attached file (only bottom lines, starting @ last time-stamp jump), should able find clue , identify problem.

for general information - there known bug network manager happens specific drivers on specific hardware , has been reported before several times. think there patch available network manager not yet updated in repositories.

so, regardless of inspecting log files clues, here quick possible workaround may work anyway:

can replace network manager , use wicd instead (https://launchpad.net/wicd), in software center , ubuntu repositories. wicd nicer graphical interface wired/wireless network management pretty replaces functionality of network manager.

small risk in doing exchange - have careful , things step step, or might left without network connection... given in ubuntu done via internet connection, wont fun when happens... (you need download .deb file of network manager using different laptop, transfer 1 , install).

install wicd , disable network manager, follow instructions in following link (coincidentally, done solve exact same problem have):
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/aus...-with-wicd/463

can install wicd directly software center, or try latest version developer's website

important: critical disable network manager after wicd working, or left without networking connection.

hope above resolve wireless hassle!
let know if wicd worked you.
