Thread: Adding an existing user to a group isn't working as advertized

i not know if misinformed, not have exected result.

told in order developer have read/write access /var/www user had added www-data group.

have enabled user log in using ssh. when log in user using ssh, can change /var/www, , can read file there (index.html). however, can not edit it.

added user www-data using following:

usermod -a -g www-data theuser

when so, can see in group file user name has been added end of www-data record. nothing else seems have changed. user still can not edit in /var/www.

did miss?

thanks

ted

iirc change won't take effect until /etc/passwd file re-read - typically that's when user logs out , in believe user can force reload in current login environment executing

code:
newgrp -
