Applying feather on image

i have been using feather on image photo create corner faded edges after upgraded ver cs6, encounter problem when applying same method using feather (radius: 15-20) on image photo , did inverse, warning message popped out "warning: no pixels more 50% selected selection edges not visible". hence, cannot apply feather on image, can explain why so? image full solid color layer.

before inverted selection, feather such no part of image 'less' 50% selected, after tried invert selection, no part more 50% , unable continue.  nothing worry about.  use 1 of number of work-arounds make fether work way want to, , way make controllable, , adjustable.

 

i prefer use layer masks, can use masks properties adjust mask. curves or levels adjustment layer, darken or lighten corners per requirments.  use eliptical marquee tool create oval selection, , layer mask selected, fill black.  turn off selection (ctrl/cmd d) , apply gaussian blur feather black oval.

 

with mask selected can use mask properties panel fine tune mask.  if thin use levels directly mask harden feather.  free transform make bigger or smaller.  note free transform not work if have black on outside of mask, temporarily invert mask round that.
