Thread: Looking for replacements for nautilus & gedit (and I want to rant a tiny bit)

this post has been color coded convenience.

alright. i'm still having pains moving 12.04 10.04. importantly have had replace of long term software friends because have went on the dark side of integration , poor design. hasn't been big of problem, because pool of alternatives large, have come big snap nautilus , gedit.

i'm using xfce , don't have problems using marlin (or similar) file manager. i'm still using nautilus render desktop. clump incoming files little piles on , xfdesktop not let me that. so, yeah, right running 2 file managers.

i need render icons onto desktop let me slide them off edges bit , pile them up. nautilus used perfect this, now, preference favoring huge wide filenames on icons kind of mess. i don't nautilus devs thinking anymore. void space between icons , names taking real estate weird. if cared more filenames icons open terminal. why should continue use nautilus render desktop? doing me making wrong file manager appear when open folder on desktop.

new gedit has 2 big problems can't seem work around, although feel there should way work around instead of replacing it. gedit favorite program.

first line numbers not separated lines. if i'm looking @ code or line numbers have meaning , first character on line number markedly confused. second problem 'recently used files' thing comes automatically , can't disabled. gross! don't need want show text document knowing have opened 30 video files of attractive women playing violin. why aren't these things adjustable? curses on gnome devs!

i need gedit replacement nice coloring, plugins, , automatic indentation i'm used without above. must plain text editor can handle encoding might throw @ it.

that's it. i have replaced whole lot of software in regular work flow these last 2 weeks. i'm pretty happy xfce; doesn't have many shortcomings compared gnome2 , manages outshine in 1 or 2 places.

should point out don't care if replacement packages have huge dependencies or tied gnome, kde, or similar. i mean i'm running lightwm, compiz, nautilus, marlin, xfce 4 desktop panels, , i'm using software on place that: opera, konversation, etc...
