Thread: Critical file disappeared from ntfs after ubuntu installation

i wanted upgrade old version of ubuntu recent 1 made following steps:
1) created large (over 30gb) tar.gz archive containing data home directory
2) moved ntfs partition
3) launched ubuntu (12.04) cd
4) resized ntfs partition during installation
5) completed installation

launched brand new ubuntu , wanted copy archive so:
1) mounted partition on archive located
2) have run 'ls -l' in place of filesize, modification date etc. '?' appeared instead of values
3) launched windows xp installed on same machine , did not show file on partition @
4) linux not show file anymore

tried running chkdisk under windows did not fix problem. tried ntfsundelete in linux shows file cannot recovered.

appreciate much! have lost lot of data. have happend? there chance of recovering file?
