Thread: Boot hanging at initramfs


i have virtually no experience ubuntu!

customer has asked me recover data (created in ubuntu). on toshiba laptop win vista dual boot. whenever option boot ubuntu taken hangs @ "initranfs" , goes no further. machine boot vista safemode horrendously slow in normal vista; because of recent power-out , overheating due cooling fan failure (now rectified).

complete ubuntu ignoramus, need advice on is:how can access files vista? possible cure boot-hang @ initramfs? customer not want spend cash on work because laptop going consigned scrapheap once has files back.

please keep explanation simple because have 24 hours in head around this!!!

so advice or workaround recover ubuntu or / , fix initramfs wil wasted.

files recovery , boot ubuntu live cd/usb , can recover many files want.
open nautilus command terminal (ctrl+alt+t)
code:
gksudo nautilus
, can copy (files ubuntu or vista) external usb or hdd.

if don't have live session ubuntu , can make 1 within vista unetbootin program.

1)grab .iso here --> http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/
2)grab unetbootin here --> http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
3) burn .iso usb stick (at least 2gb) unetbootin.
4) boot usb (configure bios or press 'one boot key' select device).

if laptop incapable boot usb , need cd . same steps shouldn't use unetbootin cd burning program instead.
