Thread: What is this pem key thing

for years i've known , used ssh keys automate login. i've used ssh-keygen , copied public key authorised keys wherever needed log in into.

couple of months ago started aws , have thing called key pairs, sure closely related keys know.... isn't same thing. these strange keys work - can use them per instruction on ec2, not same way i'm used to.

explain me difference, , more .pem file works -i flag in ssh. advantages of 1 on other, etc.

i've taken adding normal kind of keys ec2 instance user authorised_keys files since know better... , not find way automate dolphin , scp , other tools (i ssh work pem file)

have not yet managed hit right google search terms knowledge , understanding of pem still near nil.

aws generate .key , .pem file initial setup of instance. used guarantee temporary access instance you, , underlying access of "other" aws services can tie instance.

should generate or add existing key.pub contents instance's /root/.ssh/authorized_keys or appropriate /home/$user/.ssh/authorized_keys since root login disabled on new aws instances... (you'll have either enable or use sudo ubuntu user account)
