Thread: help.ubuntu.com issues

the help.ubuntu.com pages editable, wiki-style, lack talk pages, means problems contents have brought elsewhere. no clear indications exist, ended here. no forum dedicated category find.

onward specifics:

on "repositories/ubuntu" page (help.ubuntu.com/community/repositories/ubuntu), "authentication tab" section opaque point of unhelpfulness. reads simply:
"authentication keys" obtained maintainer of software repository. maintainer place copy of authentication key on public key server such www.keyserver.net. key can retrieved using command:
  • gpg --keyserver [name of keyserver] --recv-keys [keyhash]

  • in our example above, import maintainer's authentication key follows:

  • gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys 1135d466

  • then, add key ubuntu's apt trusted keys database following command

  • gpg --export --armor 1135d466 | sudo apt-key add -

first, "example above" appears non-existent. jump anchor needed once apparently missing example re-inserted text. second, , foremost, authentication key hash 1135d466 obtained how? not mentioned anywhere else on page, , not appear in image either. came page precisely find out how obtain repository's key (when isn't supplied s root file). gpg requires key hash, how said key hash obtained? not explained @ all.

the keys default repositories should included automatically. need add these manually if add further repos yourself.

if do choose add repo then, wiki article states, signing key should obtained maintainer of software repository. example, if want add ppa mozilla team key (1024r/ce49ec21) shown when click on link entitled "technical details ppa". latter part of key shown in wiki article screenshot.

hope clarifies things.
