Thread: no sound all of a sudden

i'm running dell inspiron 1520 ubuntu 12.04.

i'm trying watch youtube , have discovered have no sound. tried music through vlc , still no sound.

ideas?

i've been through sound settings , active.

run

alsamixer

in terminal , check levels of outputs not set low or muted.
move slider slider, , raise , lower levels cursor keys;
mute , unmute "m" key.
tab move "playback" "capture".
in capture page use spacebar enable different input devices (mic, line, cd, video).
esc save , exit.
