Thread: Not able to install Ubuntu on an older desktop


the other day went goodwill store uncle works @ @ used computer section have there. ended buying desktop $36. works great, reason can't install ubuntu on it. when trying boot live cd, shows endlessly blinking cursor in top left. same result usb stick. unusually, able install windows 7 dvd no issues. i'm not sure issue be. suspect may have hardware. since i've had 4 days, don't know specs. here's know:

intel pentium d 2ghz
4gb ddr2 ram
evga geforce gtx 550 ti (added myself. no way got $36)
think has intel motherboard, that's says on bios screen.
otherwise, think custom tower.

i'm not sure of chipset model or type. aside ubuntu issue, quite satisfied desktop. appreciated.

can run installer within windows? try , set dual boot, in case install doesn't work.

(1) firstly, download , install gtkmm windows using wine. Thread: Twinview issues

hi all, recovered white screen of death having reinstalling nvidia drivers via command line in recovery mode. when rebooted after that, fine, except 1 of monitors not displaying anything. ran sudo nvidia xconfig, created conf file me, issue not resolved. in x server settings, secondary monitor (the 1 not displaying), detected , enabled in twinview, resolution not detected , screen black. if try switching workspaces, little window showing workspaces show second monitor sitting next monitor, same in x server settings. options have resolving this? lot!
