How I plan to move image files and catalog separately. Double checking my plans.


growth forces move of catalog , image files. cataog , images on hard drive together. have bought bigger hard drive (wd black 4tb) better accommodate images. win7 computer built 256gb ssd (c:) boot drive , home of programs photoshop , lightroom. catalog has reached 1.6gb , preview folder 7-8 gb considering moving these files ssd because there 130 free gb on boot ssd. catalog backups 100gb have go somewhere else, or lot of backups have shunted off hard drive.

 

i re-read lot of advice here moving files growth or speed. separating picture storage "lrcat" file seems work long teach program new location of "lightroom" folder on new hard drive. have had lrcat file , preview folder in own folder @ top level of image holding file.

 

about order of steps:

  1. copy os raw, jpeg images , sidecars inside lightroom folder new hard drive. top folder name still "lightroom". folder structure before copy new bigger drive.
  2. rename -- on older smaller hard drive --  original folder "lightroom2" or else keep db reading it
  3. move lrcat folder -- without db backups -- ssd in own new top-level folder.
  4. start lightroom new catalog location.
  5. teach find original folder of photos , future imports go new hard drive. when settled down , there seems no corruption of files or folders delete old files on previous hd home of collection.

 

i open buying new ssd dedicated lightroom, leaving boot ssd unchanged, if necessary.

 

does sound right? in advance suggestions, improvements.i have appreciated advice receive here.

it looks fine. step 2 can eliminated. when start lightroom in step 4 still see images in current location (i.e. smaller drive), step 5 simple right-click on top level folder in folders panel, select "update folder location" , use point folder on new hard drive. lightroom relinks new hard drive.

 

but way work....

 

regarding plan move catalog folder boot ssd, keep eye on space. 7-8gb previews sounds on low side 1-6gb catalog. catalog quarter of size, previews folder on 20gb. went through drive update on system, installing 240gb ssd boot drive, , ssd dedicated catalogs/previews (though have lot of test catalogs use try resolve issues raised here , @ other forums).

Thread: Twinview issues

hi all, recovered white screen of death having reinstalling nvidia drivers via command line in recovery mode. when rebooted after that, fine, except 1 of monitors not displaying anything. ran sudo nvidia xconfig, created conf file me, issue not resolved. in x server settings, secondary monitor (the 1 not displaying), detected , enabled in twinview, resolution not detected , screen black. if try switching workspaces, little window showing workspaces show second monitor sitting next monitor, same in x server settings. options have resolving this? lot!
